Greetings from Iraq - Week 45
By Major John Rosnow
Sunday, January 11, 2004 1:29 PM

It has been a good week. Time continues to travel by quickly.

It is about time to say no more regular mail as mail is now taking 3 to 4 weeks to get here and they are going to quit picking up mail the end of January. Then it will be forwarded.

The weather continues to be decent here. We had a little rain, but not enough to make it muddy.

Have a great week!

Week 45

4 January 2004 - I got up about 1100 today and got ready for work. We ate lunch in the room. I had a tuna fish sandwich, and a ham sandwich. I pulled out the computer so Tom could check his pictures from his new camera. They came out really good. After that I played a little of Medal of Honor. Travis was watching, then Brad, Nick, Paul, and Matt came by and watched me play. I offered to let them play, but they enjoyed watching. After about an hour, I got ready and went to see the PAO and give them some more photos and video footage they were looking for. I went up to work and checked email. I did some writing in the journal, then went to dinner. I am back to finish the journal, weekly email, and then go back to the room. I already have my SITREP done for the evening. I want to look for a book online before I leave. I am also doing a quick check for condo availability in Fort Lauderdale. Nothing in Fort Lauderdale. I got my books ordered and I talked to my dad. I also downloaded several publications that I will need for the yearly training brief that I need to prepare. It is almost midnight and about time I head back to the building. I am trying to contact Half.com as I never received my Shrek DVD that I ordered in October. I contacted the seller a few times and they said it was sent, but it never arrived. I figured it is not showing up. The internet connection is very slow tonight so it is a pain to try and correspond or pull up information.

5 January 2004 - Good day today. I got up around 1000 and went for a run. I ran about 4 miles today. I took a shower and went to work. I was going to leave for lunch, but had noodles instead. I finally got my letter to take down to finance. I dropped that off this afternoon to try and get my hardship pay for February, March, and April 2003. They said they have to send it to Fort McCoy so it may take about a month to show up. After that I went back to work. I went to the BUB, then we went to dinner. Tom, Travis, and I came back by the room and read, then went back to work. I left work about 2330. I came back and listened to music and read a magazine and wrote a letter. It was nice to come back and have the light on and listen to music not with the headphones. Since Eric left, we have the light on later as Tom, Travis, and I are all working later. Tom and Travis must have came back about 0130 and we all read about another hour.

6 January 2004 - I woke up about 0730 and had a neck ache again so I fell back asleep until 0900. I feel better now. I got up and got laundry slips for our room, then came back and made a pot of coffee. I am updating the journal and a few photos. I will take a look at some of my credit card slips now and make sure everything looks OK. Tom is up reading, but Travis is still sleeping. I really need to get a box ready to ship today. I have a fan to send home, and some other things that I no longer need, but want to keep. I did not get the box ready to go today. By the time Travis got up, I was getting ready for work. It was a long night and I was kind of crabby by the end of the night. I was tired of working, then at 0030, I got in the weekly CG updates from Class I and GSO so I went through those. I left work about 0230. I went back to the room and laid in bed and watched The Outer Limits. It was very good. I found out that they have a hockey puck in every episode. It is in the background at least once in every episode. I went to sleep about 0530.

7 January 2004 - I got up about 1030 and went and took a shower and got ready for work. I was going to leave at lunch today and have a sandwich in the room, but I got hungry and had some noodles at work. I also wanted to be there when Horace left to go and work out. By the time he got back, I did not feel like leaving. I pretty much sat in front of the computer working on things for 6.5 hours straight. I was working on the Yearly Training Brief (YTB) and Yearly Training Calendar (YTC) in addition to my regular Supply Division duties. I went to dinner and did not go back in to the office. Tom, Travis, and I watched an episode of The Outer Limits after dinner. They went back to work and I worked on packing up things in my room. I got 3 boxes ready to send, and a couple of envelopes of things. I will send that off in the morning. I got done packing stuff up about 0130. Tom came in after that and he and I watched one more episode of The Outer Limits before we went to sleep.

8 January 2004 - I got up a little after 0900 this morning and went and got my new issue of DCUs. I got two pair of DCUs, a hat, and a pair of boots. I was going to take them up to the alteration shop, but it was too close to noon so I did not think I would make it to the meeting on time. I figured I would go later this afternoon. I found out that MAJ Roy Carlton passed away. He went home on leave, was diagnosed with a brain tumor, had surgery and was doing OK last I heard. There will be a memorial service for him on Saturday. My replacement was in working today. He got in around 2100 last night. Nice guy. We worked a bit today and then we worked with Rita on the COSCOM side of things. I was going to go to the post office this afternoon, but had a 1530 meeting so I did not have time. At 1600 I brought my DCU tops up to the alteration shop. They did not have any patches at supply so I am going to buy them at the alteration shop. They make them there. They are OK, but not as good as the military ones. They are also $5 each. I could not believe that. Now I am having second thoughts about getting my stuff sewn on. I may just sew the other things on and wait until the unit gets in more patches. It is not like I need the other sets of DCUs this late in the game. It would be nice to have a new set for going home, so I may just get it sewn on one uniform. Sewing is cheap, only 50 cents a patch. I will also see if anyone has more patches at the unit so I can sew the good ones on. It is now almost midnight and I am having a cup of orange tea. It is really good. All the NIPR computers are busy right now, so it looks like I may just go back to the room. We are supposed to be out of our room NLT 1700 on the 10th. I moved one bag out to the tent today. I will go and mail my things in the morning and move some more out tomorrow.

9 January 2004 - I got up early this morning, about 0830 or so. I went over to the post office and mailed three boxes home to myself, and a few others off to friends. I came back to the room and it was 1110 so I got ready for work. I got in before noon and discussed a few things with Horace and Rich. Then we had our meeting and I stayed and worked while Horace went to go move out of his tent to the new tent. Granny brought in a dried fruit tray today. It was very good. I had a date, plum, apricot, papaya, and a fig. About 1600 I left to go move into the tent. I got done around 1830 and Tom, Travis, and Mike went to dinner at DFAC 3. We had beef roast and shrimp. Very good. I got a box from Lee and Cletus tonight, all kinds of goodies and a nice letter from Lee in there too. I am back at work now and it is almost 2300. I am tired and going to go back to the tent and get some sleep. I got on a NIPR computer, then had to help someone with Excel before I left. I got back to the tent about 0100 and went to sleep.

10 January 2004 - I woke up to an alarm clock this morning, but it was not mine so I went back to sleep. We also had some explosions this morning. Inbound rocket attack. I finally got out of bed about 1030 and went and shaved and then took a shower in the 19th SC showers. It was OK, but a little cramped. The water was hot though. I went up to work at noon, and checked email and FRAGOs. I went to lunch with Tom, Travis, and Lee, but when we got to the DFAC at 1325, there was a line and I had a meeting at 1400 so I left and went back to the tent and heated up a cup of noodles. I had no spoon so I just tipped the cup up and ate it that way. I gave away all my plastic wear the night before, and someone had already grabbed it when I looked for it. After the redeployment meeting, I seen the HHC Commander about the ammo plan for redeployment. I then went and cashed a check and went to the memorial service for MAJ Carlton. After the memorial service, I went back to the tent and picked up everyone's laundry in the tent, including mine. I had to hang my stuff up as it was damp. I came back to work and read email and FRAGOs, then went to dinner with Lee, Tom, Travis, and Matt (the usual amoeba of folks). After that, Travis and I went to DOL and watched the new Lord of the Rings movie, The Return of the King. It was pretty good. We had to skip forward a couple parts of the movie as the screen froze, but other than that it was good. We came back to work and I am about finished up. It is already 0045. I think I will go back and go to sleep after I check NIPR. I got back to the tent about 0200 and it was starting to sprinkle. I hope it does not rain a lot.
