September 2003

For the month of September, we had a small fellowship of 6. Everyone must have been just as busy as I have been this summer.

Wade started the evening out with one of his favorites from Kansas City; an unfiltered wheat beer from the Boulevard brewery. This beer was unusually clear for a wheat beer.

Once again, Owen took another trip to New Glarus and brought back a Weiss very similar to Wade's sample. The Solstice variety appeared more cloudy and unfiltered looking. I thought it had a banana aroma.

Next I thought it appropriate to share my Honey Amber, to progress our evening from lights to darks. Others described it as complex, sweet, and having an apparent honey taste.

At this point, we ran out of beer selections (Nooooo!) and moved on to Tim's selection of Woodchuck's Granny Smith, Draft Cider. It had a nice flavor and was smooth.

Owen was indeed generous this evening, which definately made up for those who missed the meeting. We passed around his popular Apple Wine. Described as dry and appley. Owen also brought in a barley wine on behalf of Dennis from Semplex. Very warm, we guesstimated the alcohol at about 10-12%. It was mildly hoppy and not syrupy like many barley wines. Excellent batch, thanks Dennis!

I'd also like to mention that we had a special guest at the beginning of our meeting, Jim, who generously donated a large supply of brewing supplies, which have been saved for future door prizes. Also, please welcome Jerry Setterholm, our newest member.
